Today is my sister’s birthday. Today is another anniversary of sorts. Three years ago on March 10, Randi Murray, my agent at the time, called me to say, “Mr. Catanoso, you have a contract.” Thrilling words to hear for the first time. That’s when Judith Regan, former HarperCollins publisher, gave her editor the green light to take a risk on a book about an Italian-American journalist with a saint in the family tree. Tomorrow, I head to New York City to tell folks what’s happened since. Thank you, Randi. Thank you, Judith. Happy birthday, Marlene.

“Justin Catanoso’s remarkable journey comes to light for all in “My Cousin the Saint.” It chronicles a search in family history that is literally amazing, unique and undeniably interesting. Catanoso calls his book “A Search for Faithy, Family, and Miracles,” and it can safely be said that all three elements were found during his journey and chronicled elegantly in his book.”

The Washington Post Book World takes note of My Cousin the Saint in a recommendation of new titles.

The cover clearly drew the reviewer in. Like so much else with this project, I have been blessed with the good fortune to have remarkably talented people contributing along the way. James Iacobelli at HarperCollins is responsible for the gorgeous cover design. And the lovely image of Padre Gaetano on the cover is the work of noted Austin, Texas illustrator Marc Burkhardt.

The image was actually commissioned in 2004 by Holly Holliday and Lance Elko at Attache magazine, US Airways former in-flight title, for an article I wrote about the saint and my Italian relatives. For those interested, Marc has agreed to make available high-quality prints of the iconic Padre Gaetano illustration.

Two years ago today, I was preparing for a month-long stay in Italy to research the life and family of my cousin, Padre Gaetano Catanoso. A year ago today, I had just completed the first draft of my book and sent it on to Cassie Jones, my editor at William Morrow/HarperCollins. Today (the day actually arrived!) my book has its release across the United States and Canada.

And tomorrow, the first newspaper story on my book appears (May 21) in The Herald of Cape May County, where I am from. It can be seen online here. Writer Jim Vanore did a great job.

It has been, and continues to be, a wonderful journey.
